God Of War Developer’s New Project Is Reportedly Not A Sci-Fi Game Or A New IP

Jason Schreier has followed up on his previous comments about Sony Santa Monica Studio‘s next project in a post on ResetEra, stating that as far as he’s aware, the game will not take the form of a science-fiction project.

Interestingly, the Bloomberg journalist stated that the God of War developer’s new title, which he described yesterday as the ‘next big thing,’ isn’t a new IP, but may ‘feel like one.’

I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that’s why people are confused. Please don’t ask me more questions about this – if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it’ll be in an article, not on a forum. I can also confirm that Ashhong knows what they are talking about. And that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense.

Sony Santa Monica Studio has been busy staffing up for its mystery project for a while now, and back in May opened a number of new positions for the game. Cory Barlog, the director on God of War (2018) and creative director on God of War Ragnarok (2022), is working on the new title.

Barlog has been a key member of Sony Santa Monica since the original God of War, serving as lead animator on the first game and directing 2007’s God of War II. He briefly departed Santa Monica Studio to work on the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot at Crystal Dynamics before returning to the God of War team.

Sony has not officially announced the next project from its Santa Monica Studio and it’ll likely be a while before we hear anything.
