Calvino Noir, a hugely stylish stealth adventure with a gorgeous noir veneer, has been confirmed for a release on PS4.
Set during World War I and drawing on a vast range of noir cinema and classical architecture, Calvino Noir tells the tale of a disillusioned trio who attempt to expose the corruption of officials who are looking to profit from the events of the Great War.
With an emphasis on making buildings feel like they’ve been ‘"ived in" and true to life, game director Dan Waters was keen to point out that the environments in Calvino Noir don’t merely exist to serve gameplay mechanics but will instead feel much more organic.
Speaking about this, Waters explains: “I think that the first thing is that the spaces you move through feel like they could be places people would actually inhabit. That makes it more satisfying to sneak through to find clues or avoid guards. It is a new treatment for the platform game genre.
"Each location is set out like a real church or factory or hotel,” he goes on to say, “For games that use stealth like ours, environment design is essential to not only give you fun places to hide but also to build routes around interesting locations that actually make sense. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen that many churches with a ventilation system you can crawl around!”
In addition to noir overtones and the environments which feel realistic and memorable, Calvino Noir’s core revolves around the three characters that the player can switch between and, most notably, how their unique skillsets can be combined to overcome the puzzles and obstacles that crop up throughout the game.
No release date was provided for Calvino Noir other than "very soon." This looks like one to stick on the radar, for sure.
