Mike York, a former animator at Rockstar Games, has told KiwiTalkz that he reckons Grand Theft Auto VI is in a fully playable state right now from start to finish, with the company focussing on eliminating any lingering bugs ahead of launch later this year.
The interview is now unlisted, but York stated during the chat that he thinks GTA VI is now in the bug-squashing phase, and revealed that during his time working on GTA V he “played the game all day, every day for, like, 8-to-ten hours a day.”

They’re probably still making a few new things here and there or adding to things here and there, of course, but I would assume that the game’s probably playable now, and a bunch of people are testing the whole thing all the way through. There’s probably a ton of bugs – as is the case with crowded open-world games still in development – and they’re fixing all those bugs, and they’re trying to find more bugs, and they’re trying to find as many bugs as they can before they release because a game like GTA is unlike any other game.
As previously reported, York also said during the same interview that he doesn’t think GTA VI will achieve 60 FPS on consoles, at least not initially. Instead, he predicts that Rockstar will instead shoot for a locked 30 FPS. Meanwhile, Steven Ogg, who portrayed Trevor in GTA V, wants to have his character killed off in the beginning of GTA VI as a means of passing the torch to a new generation.
Grand Theft Auto VI is pencilled in for a Fall 2025 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
