Grand Theft Auto VI May Not Have Started Full Production Until 2018, Suggest Ex-Rockstar North Artist

Ex-Rockstar North developer David O’Reilly has revealed in a YouTube video that he joined up to work on Grand Theft Auto VI in 2018, which indicates the game may not have entered full production until that date. Many people have widely assumed that the game had been in development for a longer period of time given that GTA V shipped in 2013, although an exact time frame isn’t known.

Speaking in reaction to the various screenshots and new trailer doing the rounds, O’Reilly commented that he “worked on GTA 6 from 2018 – 2023,” having “went onto it after we wrapped up on Red Dead Redemption 2.”

The key thing here is that O’Reilly only confirmed that he started working on the game in 2018; there’s a chance it could have been in full production ahead that date, before he joined the project. At the very least it seems a lot of Rockstar’s team were busy with Red Dead Redemption 2 until that point, however.
