Peter Molyneux, the man behind games like Populous, Black & White, and more recently Fable, just told VG247 that "the greatest story ever told" is probably "going to be in a computer game.”
A bold claim from a man known for bold claims. Still, it’s heartening that some people in the industry have such high ambitions.
“And I think that if I play the greatest story ever told in the same game as you play it, your greatest story is going to be different to my greatest story," Molyneux elaborated.
“And that is power.”
While obviously current technological barriers will eventually fade away, it’s interesting to ponder how non-linearity affects narrative. While we’re not experts in the area, it seems like the more branching a game’s plot is, the less focus that each story branch receives. That, however, is up for developers to solve, not for us lowly journalists to tackle.
