A new roguelike title named Ground Zero Hero is coming to PS5, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S later this month. The game features a vibrant hand-drawn art style that is inspired by The Simpsons and Rick & Morty, and invites the players to channel their inner freak and explore the post-apocalyptic wasteland as they fight tons of different mutant enemies.
As you level up from collecting the enemies’ irradiated guts, you are able to unlock new skills; these skills can be levelled up during the match. Developed by solo creator Rowan Edmondson, Ground Zero Hero will be launching on August 20, but if you purchase Ground Zero Hero before August 27 on console, you will get a 10% discount, but if you are purchasing on Steam, you have till September 3, 2026, and it has a 15% discount.
Redmonson commented:
After 3 years of working 7 days a week doing literally everything myself on this game from code to animation to music (marketing not so much) – it’s almost hard to believe it’s finished and we have a release date. I’m excited to see it go out in the world and hopefully make it that little bit weirder.
“Working with Rowan on Ground Zero Hero has been a reminder of why independent games continue to push this entire industry forward. He took a wild idea, committed to it completely, and built an experience that’s equal parts fun, hilarious, challenging, and genuinely addictive,” added Marc Anthony Rodriguez, Director of Publishing & Strategic Partnerships at Acclaim, Inc. “We’re proud to help bring Rowan’s vision to players around the world. August 20th is just the beginning, a new summer arcade straight-to-the-fun game; we can’t wait to see players discover the absurdity, experimentation, and pure chaos that make Ground Zero Hero such a unique experience.”
Some of the really cool features that will be in the game from launch are as follows:
- UNLOCK an ever-growing list of powerful mutations and permanent upgrades
- DISCOVER devastating combinations to craft your ultimate mutant
- EXPLORE multiple wastelands, each with its own unique interactive elements.
- BATTLE to a dynamic soundtrack that changes with gameplay
- SURVIVE the apocalypse by destroying piƱatas for that sweet, sweet candy.
- GIVE BIRTH to a man in a chicken suit
From what I have seen so far from the trailer and from the information given to us, the game looks really interesting, and I can’t wait to hear more about Ground Zero Hero as we head towards the launch. If you wish to see some gameplay yourself, there is a trailer on the Acclaim YouTube channel which you can find here. Finally, if you fancy some hands on with the game already, there is a demo available on Steam. You can also Wishlist it on the PlayStation Store here
