GTA 5 has shipped an epic 60 million copies worldwide

Grand Theft Auto V has shipped over 60 million units worldwide since its launch in September 2013, Take-Two said during its Q3 financial results overnight.

In addition, the game’s online component, Grand Theft Auto Online, continued to drive profit for the publishing giant, with Take-Two noting that December 2015 generated “record revenue results.” Furthermore, the company expects GTA Online to grow for the duration of the fiscal year.

Elsewhere, Take-Two reiterated that the upcoming Mafia III is still scheduled for release in calendar year 2016.

Rockstar’s latest crime epic takes place in San Andreas, a fictional representation of Southern California, U.S., and sees gamers taking on the role of three characters: Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Gamers must switch between the three protagonists in order to accomplish missions, such as the action-packed heists, as well as undertaking the dozens of side quests on offer in the game’s richly-detailed open-world setting.

GTA V was originally released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One in September 2013. The game was an immediate success, generating over $800 million in day-one sales and becoming the fastest selling video game of all time in the process. By early October, the game had sold 2.6 million copies in the U.K. alone.

Rockstar eventually brought the game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One the following November, where it topped the U.K. charts upon release and by February 2015 had sold-in 10 million copies globally. That same month, it officially supplanted Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 as the U.K.’s best-selling game of all time.

In recent months, Rockstar has been supporting GTA Online with a series of new content, putting into question the status of the planned single-player DLC for the main game. Recently, one of the game’s voice actors said that he knew nothing of any story-based DLC for GTA V.
