Obbe Vermeij, a former technical director at Rockstar North, has suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI‘s developer may not know if the game can hit its intended Fall 2025 release window until next summer, noting that Grand Theft Auto IV’s delay was made just four months before its intense launch date.
Here’s what the former Rockstar North employee had to say on X:
The decision to delay gtaIV was made 4 months or so before the original release date. Any further and it’s hard to make the call. R* is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish. Also: GtaVI will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they’re 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer.

Just last week a rumour started circulating that GTA VI had been pushed into 2026, but was quickly shot down by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who had heard from a number of Rockstar sources that it was, as far as they were aware, still on track for next year.
Grand Theft Auto VI is in development for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in Fall 2025.
