When Helldivers 2 arrived on the scene in the beginning of February, it exploded in a way that absolutely no one could have expected. So much in fact that, until now it was the top-selling game in the United States for 2024.
But it has been usurped from that top spot by the one game anyone with some knowledge of US gamer buying habits could’ve guessed – EA Sports College Football 25 is now the top-selling game for 2024 in the US, just one month after it launched.
The news came from Circana analyst and executive director and games industry advisor Mat Piscatella, who consistently publishes updates on how games and hardware are selling in the US.
In his latest update today he showed how EA Sports College Football 25 now sits at the top, with Helldivers 2 in second place, and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in third place. Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the newly released EA Sports MVP Bundle (which just packages College Football and Madden NFL 24 together) round out the rest of the top five.
College Football 25 was even a driving force behind console sales, Piscatella adds, with people who presumably stopped playing games when the last NCAA game was published going out and buying consoles just for the series return.
Helldivers 2 definitely sold a lot of copies, but its doubtful anyone bought a PS5 just to play it. College Football 25 is simply on another level, it seems, when it comes to the power the series holds in the US.
