Hideo Kojima Konami News PS5 The Matrix The Wachowskis

Hideo Kojima Was Asked By The Wachowskis To Make A Matrix Game, But Konami Wasn’t Interested

Speaking in an interview with Time Extension, Konami Digital Entertainment’s former vice president of licensing, Christopher Bergstresser, has revealed that the Wachowskis approached Hideo Kojima with the idea of him making a video game based on The Matrix, but Konami wasn’t interested and turned it down.

According to Bergstresser, the Wachowskis were big fans of the Metal Gear creator, and made a call to Konami with the request of meeting up with Kojima-sam to discuss a Matrix game. This was back in 1999, not long after the release of the original movie in US cinemas.

The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima. So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima), and I were at the Konami HQ, and we got a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to come in and meet with Kojima. So they did!

The two of them came in with their concept artist, and effectively they said to Kojima, ‘We really want you to do the Matrix game. Can you do that?’ Aki translated this into Japanese for Mr. Kitaue, and Kitaue just looked at them and told them plainly, ‘No’. We did still get to enjoy the Matrix Japanese premiere and afterparty, though.

Kojima’s most recent project is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which arrived for PS5 back in June 2025, and he’s currently working on a new stealth-action title known as Physint.
