The next-generation entry in the Hitman franchise has been cancelled, according to the LinkedIn profile of senior game designer, Richard Knight (via VideoGamer).
Originally announced in late 2011, the project was in development at Square Enix Montreal and would have taken the form of a “re-imagining” of the stealth-action series, starring Agent 47. First and third-person combat would have also been featured, according to Knight’s profile.
Little else is known on the game, though Knight states that the title was cancelled last year. Instead, Square is now beavering away on a new Hitman title for Android and iOS platforms .
The most recent title in the franchise, Hitman: Absolution, was released for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in November 2012.
Fox was reportedly lining up Fast & Furious star Paul Walker to appear in the new Hitman film prior to the actor’s death in an automobile accident in November 2013.
How do you feel about the cancellation of Hitman for new consoles? Did you enjoy Absolution and would have liked to have seen a new full-fledged entry? Or do you remain apathetic towards Agent 47’s exploits?
