It’s official: Hogwarts Legacy is the UK’s biggest boxed game release of 2023, dethroning EA’s annual football franchise (previously FIFA until this year’s newly-launched EA Sports FC 24) in the process after the series notched up a decade of dominance.
The last time that FIFA wasn’t ending the year as the biggest-selling boxed game in the UK was 2013, with Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 taking the crown that year. As mentioned above, this year marked the first time in 30 years that EA released a football game that wasn’t under the FIFA branding, having parted ways with the organisation.
According to Gfk data, Hogwarts Legacy sold the lion’s share of copies on the PS5, with the PS4 version coming in second place in terms of overall sales. In addition, the Wizarding World RPG also the final number one of 2023, rising three place despite sales dropping 33% week-on-week.
Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4 and Xbox One versions arriving in May and the Nintendo Switch edition launching in November. You can read our full review here.
