In an interview published on the official PlayStation Blog, Naughty Dog developers Bruce Straley and Neil Drukmann have gone into more detail about the jeep that Nathan Drake was seen driving in the explosive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End demo shown at E3 last week.
Druckmann says that the vehicle can be used outside of these cinematic set-pieces to allow players to explore the world of Uncharted 4.
“In the demo, essentially Nate’s moving at 60 mph, he’s under stress, as usual there’s people trying to kill him, so as a player your foot is always going to be on the gas, said Druckmann. “ But we use the jeep in other ways, you can jump in and out and go exploring, and we’ve been able to open up the levels and let players drive great distances.”
Straley was quick to clarify that Druckmann’s comments do not mean that Uncharted 4 will feature an open-world which you can explore freely in the jeep.
“So we’re not creating an open world where you can take the jeep anywhere – we want to make sure we’re setting up and paying off everything that we’ve put into the game in the right way,” he said. So at times, the jeep can move through vast areas, but at times like the level you’ve just seen, you’ve got to hit the gas because Sam’s in trouble.”
In the interview, Naughty Dog also talks briefly about cover mechanics in Uncharted 4, revealing that Nathan Drake will be able to hit the deck completely to take cover.
Uncharted 4 wowed the audience at E3 last week, and we were staggered by the incredible hands-on demo at the show. A release date hasn’t been confirmed, but Uncharted 4 is expected to be released in Q1 2016.
