The CEO of IO Interactive has revealed during a chat with The Game Business that the Hitman franchise will be revisited at some point in the future, quelling fears that the studio may want to move on from Agent 47’s stealthy antics.
It’s been five years since the last Hitman game, but Hakan Abrak said that this isn’t because they are neglecting the series, but rather the simple fact IO Interactive has been busy with 007 First Light and its fantasy project. Speaking of which, you may recall yesterday we reported that Abrak stated in the same interview that Project Fantasy is “in a very healthy place.”
We are looking forward to getting into the weeds on Hitman again. There hasn’t been air for that, for going in, building in systems from the ground up. But rest assured, we cannot wait to get into the engine room and upgrade, invent, and innovate Hitman for you guys again.
Nothing concrete about the future of Hitman has been made yet, but right now IO is obviously focussed on the launch of 007 First Light, which launches on May 27, 2026 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S (Nintendo Switch 2 is getting its own version later in the year). The game tells an origins story for James Bond, as he embarks on a mission that will grant his 00 Status; as such, he’s a lot more brash and not quite the sophisticated, martini-sipping super spy he would later become.
