Is the Destiny 2 leak real? Bungie contract says ‘no’

There’s a lot of talk in the Destiny community right now following details posted on Reddit apparently relating to Destiny 2. Not only does the poster name the next game in Bungie’s shooter series as Destiny 2 – The Shattered Suns, but he talks about its setting, its storyline, its release date, and the fact that Activision plans to ditch its current DLC model.

The Reddit poster claims that the information he has received is due to his close connections (a friend of a friend) with the developers working on the upcoming Destiny ‘The Taken King’ DLC and future content. He claims to know some loose details about plans for the Destiny franchise, including the evolution of the clan system and the arrival of a new way to ascend our characters.

This is what he had to say about Destiny 2:

“It is titled currently as "Destiny 2 – The Shattered Suns" and is planned for release on September of 2016. You will still be using your current characters. It will focus heavily on Osiris and his endeavors as he is the main quest giver in the game. A new form of enemy is said to be in development, Possibly Ahamkara? Couldn’t get a straight answer from anyone on that. Mercury is also supposed to be a big player in "Destiny 2 – The Shattered Suns". The main area in which the guardian will explore. Bungie has also hired on Hollywood writers for the story of this game as well. A new voice for the ghost is also being implemented. Bungie apparently stated that they are not going to continue with DLC’s, but instead release free raids, planets, etc. throughout time. They will only be continuing with the main games after TTK and its successor DLCs.”

“Finally as a bonus, there is not going to be trading implemented into the game ever. Stated,"Activision got sent a letter regarding what not to do on a mmorpg from Blizzard, and trading was on that list". Also that there is no 6th chest in the VoG or has only been known by a small group of people in the studio. It was just a bluff to keep us occupied for The Taken King most likely.”

It all seems quite plausible, until you reach the sentence about Bungie ditching DLC content and offering players “free raids, planets etc". This theory can immediately be debunked when you check out the current contract that Bungie has with Activision for the Destiny franchise. In Section 1 (Products) we see Activision’s intent to use DLC to boost revenue throughout all future versions of Destiny. It seems ludicrous that Activision would abandon that important revenue stream, perhaps to concentrate on other ways of making money through micro-transactions or even a subscription system – though, admittedly, it’s a huge surprise to us that we haven’t already seen Destiny bring in micro-transactions to buy cosmetic items in the game.

In order for Destiny to keep expanding, Activision simply has to keep the money rolling in, and by ditching DLC and offering content for free the model just wouldn’t be sustainable. That is, of course, unless Activision decide to implement a subscription-based system, which would be a major u-turn on its initial plans and a bizarre new direction for the second game in a series. Based on that fact alone, it’s hard to believe that any of the information this particular poster has ‘leaked’ about Destiny 2 is real.
