With so many HD remasters of PlayStation 2 classics coming out lately, it’s strange to think that a PC game from 2004 will soon be coming to consoles as well. Doom 3: BFG Edition seeks to take everything you know about this horror classic and turn it up to 11, bringing 720p HD, Trophy and multiplayer support, and stereoscopic 3D to your PlayStation 3.
Turns out that last bit is especially important to John Carmack (co-creator of the Doom series) and his team at id Software. In an interview with the official PlayStation Blog, id Software producer Eric Webb described how the id’s visionary leader approached the idea of adding Sony’s much-trumpeted visual splendor to this classic:
"Just like adding DualShock 3 controls to the original Doom, 3D really brings Doom 3 to life. It’s interesting when you’re playing; you almost lose all of your peripheral vision and get sucked into the experience . . . it’s the best implementation of stereoscopic 3D I’ve seen in a game so far. We were really surprised when we first had a look . . . it was great that John was so passionate about the 3D stuff – because that added some new tech and got the team’s creative engine running again, so to speak . . ."
You won’t have to wait too long to experience Doom 3 again; the BFG Edition, which also includes remastered versions of Doom and Doom 2 (with Trophy support!) is coming in October.
