Kingdom Hearts IV Hasn’t Received Any Meaningful Updates In Over 1,000 Days, But Tetsuya Nomura Finally Throws Us A Bone

Square Enix hasn’t shared any major news on Kingdom Hearts IV in just over 1,000 days according to GamesRadar, but Tetsuya Nomura has seemingly thrown us a breadcrumb by suggesting the game’s story has been finalised for some time now.

To be fair, it’s not surprising we haven’t heard anything on the game in such a long time; Square Enix is one of the few gaming developers nowadays that can keep us in the dark on upcoming projects for lengthy periods of time. Remember Kingdom Hearts III? That game was announced at E3 2013, but it wouldn’t see the light of day until early 2019, and details were few and far between its reveal and launch.

Speaking on X in wake of the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for PSP, Nomura-san talked about he importance of crossroads and their function as an “important point of divergence,” before mentioning how the motif took its inspiration from the “well-known crossroad myth from American Folklore” and how it involves a young man making a deal with the devil at a crossroads, trading his soul so he can play the guitar.

Nomura continues by saying the first time Kingdom Hearts employed the crossroads was in Chain of Memories, which revolves around losing something to gain something in return. He then notes that Birth by Sleep has a major example of crossroads where all three protagonists pay a heavy price to obtain something.

“But wait…when the Lost Masters gather at the crossroads in KH3, what is gained and what is lost? That’s a story for another time,” he concluded.

Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development presumably for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a release date yet to be determined.
