Linux Can Now Be Installed On PS5, But You’ll Need A Disc-Based Console Running Specific Firmwares

PS5 owners can now install Linux on their machine thanks to steps shared by tech wizard Andy Nguyen, who had previously revealed that he had got Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced running with Linux installed on Sony’s console at 60 FPS.

The details are available on GitHub, and while there are no risks to your hardware, there is a catch so to speak: you’ll need a PS5 with a disc drive and running firmware versions 3.xx or 4.xx, as there’s currently no support for older firmwares or the latest 5.xx iterations. Furthermore, as this is a soft mod, it will be wiped clean after each reboot. However, Nguyen revealed he is working on a way for Linux to remain installed in Rest Mode, which may become available in the future.

In terms of resolution and performance, you can select output at 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p, but only 60Hz is supported currently — 30Hz and 120Hz options are being looked at for future release.

Back when Nguyen got GTA V running, he revealed that he managed to get 4K HDMI output and audio working without any issues, alongside the PS5’s USB ports. While he noted that the CPU and GPU can be boosted to 3.5GHz and 2.23GHz, respectively, Nguyen said this caused his PS5 Slim to overheat.
