Microsoft is reportedly encouraging game developers to provide free upgrades from current to next-generation titles, which means Sony will hopefully follow suit for PS5 and make clear its own policy on upgrades.
Xbox Maker Encourages Free Next-Gen Upgrades, Will PS5 Follow?
According to a report on VGC, the Xbox Series X console maker is keen to see developers offer both current and next-gen versions of a game at no additional cost, which can be done through its own Smart Delivery service or other schemes.
In addition, it is believed the format holder is looking to give developers and publishers various means off offering titles across Xbox One and Xbox Series X, should they decide not to adhere to its recommended policies.
Already we’ve seen a number of developers confirming a free next-gen version of upcoming titles including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2 and FIFA 21.
Sony is still keeping quiet on its plans as far as PS4 to PS5 upgrades go, so hopefully this will spur them into announcing a similar policy as right now Microsoft pretty much owns that domain.
PS5 and Xbox Series X will launch in holiday 2020.
