Modern Warfare 2 could be best selling title ever, says GameStop

With anticipating surrounding Infinity Ward’s upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 having almost reached fever pitch, GameStop’s executive vice president of merchandising and marketing, Tony Bartel, has boldly claimed that the shooter "could be the best selling title of all time."

The statement comes following the U.S. retail giants Q2 earnings call, as listened in on by shareholders and various media outlets.

While pondering as to whether or not the hotly anticipated sequel could achieve such a feat, one should consider some interesting figures. The original Modern Warfare – released in 2007 – has to date sold 7.7 million units in North America across all formats. By comparison, the top selling game in that territory, Wii Play, has shifted 11 million copies thus far.

Additionally, if you include sales of games bundled with hardware, Wii Sports holds the crown with almost 24 million units sold to date in the U.S. Essentially, as pointed out by Joystiq, this means that every PS3 and Xbox 360 console owner in North America would have to purchase the Infinity Ward shooter for it to achieve such a milestone.

Regardless, one thing is for sure – it’ll sell like hot cakes either way. Modern Warfare 2 is due out on November 10.
