Mother Machine is a new multiplayer action-platformer from developer Maschinen-Mensch, the studio behind the Curious Expedition games.
This new title revealed on Tuesday features mutant gremlins called “chaos gremlins” who constantly die only to be reborn by their robot mother who sends the gremlins out to their deaths in search of resources and an answer to the planet’s mysteries.
Mother Machine takes place on a planet far from Earth that was once colonized by humans before being abandoned. Left in the humans wake is an AI who has grown defective in her years out of service, and creates the adorable “chaos gremlins” as a way to avoid eternal loneliness and stop herself from going insane.
Despite being made to withstand harsh environments, her creations are still quite fragile, so they’re reborn all the way back to where their adventure begins, with their mother. That’s how Mother Machine is a rougelike, since you’re constantly starting back from the beginning after death, trying to go further and further each run.
Other roguelike elements come in the form of different mutations of gremlins that provide different abilities as you platform your way deeper into the planet.
Mother Machine can be played solo or in co-op with up to three more friends for four player co-op, which both helps – and as the trailer shows – hinders your chances at survival.
There’s no exact release date as to when Mother Machine will arrive, but it is confirmed to arrive sometime in 2025. You can check out the reveal trailer for yourself, below.
