Kevin Conroy, the late actor who provided the iconic voice of Batman for decades, will appear posthumously in Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime as a new character, VP Baines.
Adi Shankar, the showrunner behind the Devil May Cry anime, confirmed that Conroy “recorded before he passed” and that AI was not used at all. “Mr Conroy gave it [an] amazingly nuanced performance. It was both a pleasure and an honour to work with him,” said Shankar.

Meanwhile, Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices Dante in the anime, had the following to say on X about working with Conroy:
It was an honor to work alongside Kevin Conroy for the upcoming DMC series. A true legend. Batman: The Animated Series redefined cartoons for me. For those wondering, our recording sessions took place a few years ago—animation takes quite some time to complete.
Conroy portrayed Batman in a variety of projects throughout a long career, including Rocksteady’s critically acclaimed Arkham franchise and Batman: The Animated Series, the latter where he was the first voice actor to change his tone when portraying Batman and Bruce Wayne. Conroy passed away aged 66 in November 2022 following a battle with intestinal cancer.
The Devil May Cry anime will premiere on Netflix on April 3, 2025.
