Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has hinted that we can expect more Batman video games at some point in the future following the conclusion of the ‘Arkham’ series with this summer’s Batman: Arkham Knight.
Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, Ames Kirshen, Vice President of Product Development for the Arkham and DC Comic title sat Warner Bros., said that "Batman is one of the cornerstone IPs for Warner Bros," before going on to hint that we may have not yet seen the last of the Dark Knight in terms of video games.
“We don’t have anything to talk about at this time, but the possibilities are endless with a character as dynamic and beloved as Batman," he added.
Batman: Arkham Knight has been confirmed as the final chapter in the critically acclaimed ‘Arkham’ series, which began with Arkham Asylum in 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game received universal praise for its combat system, storyline and visuals, and is ranked as one of the greatest superhero video games of all time, and for many revitalized the genre after a series of failed attempts over the years. The game shipped 2.5 million units after only a month on sale.
Given the immense success of Arkham Asylum, a sequel was inevitable. Indeed, developer Rocksteady Studios upped the ante for its follow-up, the open-world Batman: Arkham City for last-generation consoles and PC in 2011. The action takes the Caped Crusader out of the halls of Arkham Asylum and into the sprawling, crime-ridden streets of Gotham City, where he puts his combat prowess and detective skills against a series of new foes. The game proved an even greater success than its predecessor, shipping 4.6 million copies just one week after launch.
Following this, Rocksteady would take a break from the series while Warner Bros. Montreal took over the development reins for the prequel, Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013. Set on Christmas Eve, the game sees a younger Dark Knight battling a series of eight deadly assassins, who are competing for the $50 million bounty on Bats’s head. While a solid game in its own right, many gamers found that Origins lacked the same punch as the Rocksteady titles.
Finally, Batman: Arkham Knight, released earlier this year on PS4 and Xbox One, brings the franchise up to date as Batman faces his deadliest enemy yet in the game’s eponymous villain. Arkham Knight also introduces the Caped Crusader’s iconic Batmobile for the first time in the series, which proves instrumental in both navigation and combat.
