New Crash Bandicoot games possible, Activision ‘experimenting’ with series

A new Crash Bandicoot game could happen providing the recently launched Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy reaches mass market appeal, Activision’s Eric Hirshberg has said.

Speaking with GameSpot, the publishing giant said that it’s currently “experimenting” with the venerable platforming series, and that the success of the N.Sane Trilogy could potentially lead to a brand new entry in the 20-year-old series. However, that all depends on whether or not the remastered trilogy can find appeal that goes beyond a niche audience.

"We know there’s a vocal fanbase that wanted that to come back. But you never know if that is emblematic of a larger audience or just this niche, nostalgia-based community," he said. "So far, we are seeing some real passion for it, so that could lead to other things."

"Of course, we are always trying to find the next big thing. But our first priority is to make sure we are servicing the communities that we are already lucky enough to have."

Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy includes full remakes of the first three PlayStation games in the series, which have been faithfully recreated in high-definition with remastered sound effects and a new checkpoint/save system. While the original games were produced by Naughty Dog, the remakes were handled by Vicarious Visions.

In fact, the studio has previously hinted that we could see more remakes from the one-time PlayStation mascot, with Crash Team Racing looking the most likely candidate. Furthermore, the developer also expressed hope that we may yet see a brand new Crash Bandicoot game, although that decision obviously lies with Activision, who holds the rights to the IP.

Regardless, the N.Sane Trilogy is off to a great start, having entered the U.K. Charts at number one and becoming the biggest single-format launch of the year so far.
