New generation won’t buy physical media, says Harrison

Atari President Phil Harrison has peered into his crystal ball this morning, predicting that the new generation of gamers will never be required to purchase physical forms of media.

Harrison is confident that the industry will transcend the need for trusty old DVDs, CDs and boxed games, paving the way for digital distribution methods, as seen with PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE.

Speaking to EDGE, he commented that “there’s a generation of kids being born today and probably already alive who I’m pretty confident will never buy a physical media product. They will never buy a DVD, they will never buy a CD, and they will never buy a game in a box.”

Harrison was formally head of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS), before resigning from the electronics giant to join Atari in February 2008.
