New PS5 Screenshots Showcase New York City In Spider-Man 2

Insomniac Games has shared new gorgeous images of New York City with The New York Times and discussed the upcoming release of one of 2023’s most anticipated titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

The game’s design director, Josue Benavidez described his work as “It’s been a lot of living in Google Maps.” His work included contacting organizations like the Center for Brooklyn History, posting on Reddit groups devoted to the borough, and calling businesses near the buildings he was studying.

Unlike the previous entry, Spider-Man 2 will also include Brooklyn and Queens bringing challenges in getting the geometry perfect for the game. Designers also wanted to differentiate the urban landscape, so that iconic landmarks like Aunt May’s house and Brooklyn Visions Academy were respected for players to appreciate. Another difficulty was figuring out where to end the playable area in boroughs that stretch into Long Island.

“Everything is very intentionally placed,” Benavidez says, affirming there are lots of objects to show off the physics of Spider-Man’s web-slinging abilities.

One design solution was to plant more trees than you would find in the city in real life. Some changes provide small subtle enhancements, with additional greenery and shade in the virtual Times Square and many newspaper kiosks bordering refuges such as found in Union Square Park. “When there is combat, people like breaking things,” reasoned Jacinda Chew, the game’s senior art director.
