New Sony Handheld Is Reportedly In The Early Stages Of Development

Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly working on a brand new handheld that could see the format holder once again competing with Nintendo in the portable gaming space.

That’s according to a report on Bloomberg, the new handheld is still years away from release and could build on the concept of the PS Portal, which allows players to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi but isn’t able to natively play software.

The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo for the portable gaming market, according to people familiar with its development.

Sony isn’t the only company that is working on a handheld, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer revealed earlier this month that the Xbox manufacturer is working on prototypes for a handheld gaming device, but it’s probably still years away at this point.

Sony has released two portable systems to date, the PSP and the PS Vita, although Nintendo has largely dominated this market with the DS family of consoles.
