Greg Johnson, co-creator on the ToeJam & Earl franchise has revealed during a Reddit AMA that a new instalment in the cult classic franchise is already in the planning stage.
I can say that the new game is in the planning stage. We intend to make it happen. It’s going to be developed by a third party, design led by the infamous and talented producer of Back in the Groove, Nap, and will be a combo of games one and two and incorporate some of the design ideas of the original game 2 that never got made.

I just realized I forgot to mention our original producer on Back in the Groove. We actually had two great producers. Matt Conn was the original producer and the game never would have been released if it weren’t for him too. Matt and Nap are both ToeJam & Earl superstars.
The original ToeJam & Earl was released for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) back in 1991, and follows the alien rappers after they crash on Earth and must collect pieces of their wrecked ship in order to escape the planet. The game is noted for its funk-soaked soundtrack and references to 1980s and 90s urban culture. The game was followed by 1993’s ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron, as the duo return home only to find that a number of troublesome Earthlings have hitched a ride back, and end up causing havoc across the planet.
The franchise was revived in 2002 for the Xbox with ToeJam & Earl: Mission to Earth, which introduced a new character, Latisha, with players able to choose from one of the three protagonists as they search for twelve Sacred Albums of Funk and put an end to the resident Big Bad, Anti-Funk.
