New Tomb Raider movie details confirmed

The producer behind the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot has revealed a slew of new details on the upcoming action-adventure flick.

Speaking during a chat with Hey U Guys, Graham King said that Lara Croft’s next big screen outing will see the dexterous archaeologist hunting for her father, and will focus on Croft as a younger, inexperienced fortune hunter.

"This is kind of what we call a back to the roots story," he said. "This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia [Vikander]  found so interesting about it.

"I think the storytelling is really good and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director," he added.

Alicia Vikander will be stepping into Lara’s boots for the upcoming reboot, which is scheduled to hit cinemas on March 16, 2018. The actress previously revealed that the movie will indeed be an origins story, which ties in with King’s latest comments.

"That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs,” she said earlier this year.

The previous Tomb Raider films starred Angelina Jolie as the treasure-seeking heroine in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the Cradle of Life. However, after the lacklustre performance of the sequel, the series’ big screen exploits were put on ice for over a decade until plans emerged of a decision to reboot the franchise following 2013’s Tomb Raider revamp.

Tomb Raider celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, having originally launched on the Sega Saturn, PC, and PlayStation back in fall 1996. Read our review of Rise of the Tomb Raider to see how Lara’s latest adventure shapes up.
