We had word a few days ago that Raven Software is hard at work on a videogame version of the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox feature film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and today a few more details have been released giving us a further insight into the fantasy action adventure.
Set 20 years before X-Men, we can expect a tale of brutal revenge as Wolverine seeks to avenge the death of his girlfriend. The words ‘violent’ and ‘brutal’ are teasingly mentioned in the Activision press release giving us high hopes that this could be the game that truly captures Wolverine’s violent nature. Raven Software plan to try and capture his temperament and physicality like never before by giving him the full compliment of powers that fans of the comic will be aware of – we’re talking about sharp claws and fanged teeth, of course, but more importantly powerful and lightening-quick fighting abilities, including combo attacks and ruthless finishing moves, which should see him in good stead as he hunts down enemies through the likes of the African jungle and other locations from the movie.
The fact that Activision state that we’ll need to “hone our animal instinct to uncover danger,” suggests that combat won’t be the only focus though and that we’ll also need to use Wolverine’s increased sense of sight, smell and hearing to somehow track down enemies. It’s going to be interesting to see how this will be implemented and whether they can turn it into an interesting game mechanic. What we’re more interested in though is whether the violence will be watered-down to attract a broader audience or whether Raven will take the gamble and deliver the violent and bloody action title that Wolverine’s name demands.
With the developer’s previous work including the excellent Marvel Ultimate Alliance, we’re expecting X-Men Origins: Wolverine to be more than just a run-of-the-mill movie tie-in. Sadly, we’ll have to wait until May 2009 to find out.
