Nicalis founder says Hideo Kojima is ‘terrible’ at making games

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is "terrible" at making video games, reckons Tyrone Rodriguez, founder of indie studio Nicalis.

Rodriguez’s comments came during an interview with IndieGames, where he touched base on the recent criticism surrounding Japanese game development from indie stable mates Jonathan Blow and Phil Fish.

While heaping praise on a number of major Japanese-developed titles such as Demon’s Souls, Street Fighter IV and The World Ends with You, Rodriguez was none too impressed with Konami’s output.

"Konami doesn’t make good stuff," he said, before switching focus to Kojima-san himself: "He’s terrible at making games. Metal Gear is good in spite of him. I haven’t enjoyed a game of his since maybe the original Metal Gear Solid, maybe."

Elsewhere, Rodriguez expressed his disdain for the term indie developer, and offered some advice for his fellow studios.

"The main thing I want to see from indie developers is to stop calling themselves indie developers," offered Rodriguez. "You’re either a game developer or you’re not. Indie has nothing to do with it. It’s like this cool buzzword now. Do you make games? Okay, then you’re a game developer.”
