NPD Group: Sony sells 276,900 PS3s in January

Sony pushed 276,900 PlayStation 3s in the U.S. in the month of January, according to statistics released today by the NPD Group. Nintendo led the pack in January, selling 465,800 Wiis and 422,200 DSs. Microsoft sold 332,800 Xbox 360s in January.

Sony’s PSP and PlayStation 2 round out the list, selling 100,100 and 41,600 respectively. Total hardware sales were down substantially compared to the same month the prior year. In the U.S., there was some $353.7 million spent on gaming hardware, compared to $446.8 million the prior year.

On the software side, the industry earned $597.9 million in revenue compared to $682.6 million the year before. New Super Mario Bros. Toped the charts selling 656,700 copies, while Mass Effect 2 came in second with 572,100 copies sold. The only PlayStation 3 game to make the Top 10 list was Modern Warfare 2, selling 259,000 in January.
