NPD: Mortal Kombat takes U.S. software crown for April

NPD Group sales figures for the month of April 2011 have revealed that Mortal Kombat has claimed the top spot on the U.S. software chart.

The bloody brawler, developed by NetherRealm studios, sold just over one million units last month, beating out Portal 2 in the process.

Valve’s celebrated puzzler came in at number two with 637,000 units sold, followed by LEGO Star Wars III and the ever-ubiquitous Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Software sales were up in comparison to the same period last year, with five titles moving 250,000 copies compared to two in April 2010.

Elsewhere, Xbox 360 bagged first place in the hardware race for the month, shifting 297,000 units in a 60 percent increase year-on-year.

Sony’s keeping mum as to how many units PlayStation 3 moved during the period, though did observe that sales of its flagships console were up nearly 13 percent compared to April 2010.
