The NPD Group has announced that PlayStation 4 was the best-selling home console in the United States for December 2016, beating the Xbox One for a second consecutive month.
While Sony is keeping mum on actual sales figures, Microsoft weren’t afraid to pipe up and take note that PS4 sales declined year-on-year, while Xbox One actually outsold its rival during the second half of 2016. It also noted a strong performance for December 2016 for its gaming division.

PS4 sales in the last few month have been boosted by the launch of the PlayStation 4 Pro, a more powerful version of Sony’s flagship home console that allows for various visual improvements such as 4K gaming and increased frame rate, plus of course the PlayStation VR headset. In addition, both November and December saw the launch of major software in the shape of Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian, the latter a PS4-exclusive.
Sony announced earlier this month that the PS4 has sold over 53.4 million units worldwide as of December 21, 2016, following its U.S. and European debut in November 2013. Microsoft hasn’t divulged sales figures for its current-generation console, but it is believed PS4 maintains a comfortable lead over its rival.
The console maker has a number of exclusive titles lined up for release in 2017, including Horizon: Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo Sport, and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, plus various third-party highlights such as Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Double Dragon IV, and Nier.
