If you want videogame hardware and software sales in the US, you will have to look to other sources as NPD Group announced it will no longer publically report sales stats. It will, however, provide physical purchases of games, by title instead of separating titles on different consoles. That means NBA 2K11, for instance, wouldn’t have different stats for PS3 or Xbox 360.
We may still see hardware companies releasing stats, however. NPD says hardware and software subscribers can still release sales figures for their own products—meaning Sony can say how many PS3s it sold each month, if it wants.
If you tune in for Thursday’s NPD release, you won’t find the normal sales figures you’ve become accustomed to as the change is effective immediately. We, like many of you, like seeing sales figures laid out for us each month, and now it appears it’ll be up to the manufactures to decide whether they want to publish their stats each month.
