“The names Thorton, Michael Thorton. “
The creators behind Knights of the Old Republic II for the Xbox, Obsidian, has returned with their latest endeavour aimed at the next-gen market brought up by an inspiration of James Bond.
Publisher Sega and developer Obsidian has teamed up to bring what is aimed as a “James Bond style” RPG titled Alpha Protocol. The game puts players into the role of an upcoming secret agent named Michael Thorton.
Game Informer describes the game as follows:
"A modern day espionage focused action/RPG that takes you on a suspenseful ride in the vein of James Bond, Jack Bauer, and Jason Bourne. Take a wet-behind-the-ears greenhorn agent up through the ranks to become a bona-fide super spy,"
While the game’s theme is heavily derived from James Bond, the mechanics are blissfully influenced by Bioware’s Mass Effect. Alpha Protocol will feature a very similar dialog system to that of Mass Effect’s as well as real time combat. It also appears that the main character will be allowed to converse with NPCs only the once, by way of a special feature that allows players to set the tone of the conversation, allowing Thorton to speak either impatiently, furiously or charmingly depending on your choices.
It should also be noted that there will not be any character classes in the game as pointed out by Obsidian; however, there will be ten skill sets for your character to advance in throughout the course of the game.
Alpha Protocol is being developed for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 with a projected release date of spring 2009. PSU will keep you updated on more information as soon as it becomes available.
Looks like Obsidian might be onto something here. We at PSU can only imagine what this game could bring in terms of locations, characters, and story-telling. Until then, why not head over to our forums to discuss the game?
