Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Is Coming To PS5 In 2026 As Capcom Revives Its Classic Samurai Franchise

Onimusha is officially back from the dead, with Capcom announcing at The Game Awards 2024 that it’s working on a revival called Onimusha: Way of the Sword for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Not much is known about the game yet other than the Japanese setting and a 2026 release window, but the fact we’re getting a new Onimusha is pretty massive; the franchise has been dormant for years, save for a remaster of the first game a few years ago. Onimusha: Warlords launched for the PS2 back in 2001, and three sequels followed: Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny (2002), Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (2004), and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (2006).

Onimusha: Way of the Sword looks set to function as a reboot of the franchise while still retaining all the trademarks of its predecessors, right down to the collection of red orbs from fallen enemies.

Featuring epic sword fights, a lone samurai wields a sharpened blade and the Oni Gauntlet. Amidst the rush of battle and a deluge of blood, he ponders on his reason for fighting. Set in Kyoto in the early Edo period, the historic city has been transformed by the nefarious Malice with monstrous enemies known as “Genma” stalking the area around.

Onimusha Way of the Sword is out in 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
