Onimusha: Way Of The Sword Protagonist Likeness Is Based On The Late Actor Toshiro Mifune

Capcom has spilled more details on Onimusha: Way of the Sword following its new trailer during State of Play yesterday evening, revealing the game’s protagonist is based on the appearance of Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who passed away in December 1997.

The protagonist of this game is a fierce young samurai, constantly moving from one bloody and mucky fight to the next. In order to cement this image of a striking samurai, Capcom has turned to none other than the late, iconic Japanese samurai movie star Toshiro Mifune to serve as the face model for this rendition of Miyamoto Musashi.

Mifune is credited in more than 180 different projects, and is known for his collaborations with Akira Kurosawa, and is known for films including Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, and The Hidden Fortress among many more. Following his passing, he was indicted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame in 1999, and his name was inscribed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, with a release scheduled for 2026.
