Outlast Horror Spin-Off The Outlast Trials Announced

The Outlast Trials

Horror developer Red Barrels has today announced The Outlast Trials, the next installment in its pant-filling genre series. The reveal, which was made on the official Facebook page for the developer, suggests that the game is still somewhat early on in development, with the focus now being turned toward content creation and polish.

Interestingly, Red Barrels also confirmed that not only will the game NOT support VR (sorry PSVR folks), but that it will also be a spin-off set within the Outlast universe, rather than a full-blooded Outlast 3 style sequel. In terms of platforms and a release date, nothing was discussed, but we’d hazard a guess at a late 2020 release on both PS4 and PS5.

Little is known about The Outlast Trials, but we would like to think that the game will embrace some sort of co-operative or competitive play for the first time, as the synopsis below refers to players facing the horrors by themselves or with ‘fellow test subjects’. That all sounds a bit ‘Saw’ to me and I’m pretty pumped to see how they execute the concept.

Beyond such mechanics, we should probably expect the same focus on gore and scares that the series has prided itself on.

Welcome to The Outlast Trials.

The Red Barrels team is excited to announce our latest project in the Outlast universe. Set in the era of the Cold War, The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors that await by themselves or with fellow test subjects 💉

The Outlast Trials is still in production, and as our co-founder David Chateauneuf puts it: “Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time focus on content creation, variety… and gore.”

Despite the fact that the protagonists appear to be wearing VR googles, The Outlast Trials does not support VR.
