Earlier this year as he was on his way out of the company and into retirement, former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan re-opened the age-old debate regarding just how many units the PlayStation 2 officially sold.
At the time, Ryan claimed that the new number was 160 million, though PlayStation’s official account of the number of PS2 consoles sold was still 155 million.
On Tuesday however, PlayStation confirmed what Ryan said. According to PlayStation, the PS2 has sold over 160 million units since 2000.
The confirmation came through a new series of pages added to the official PlayStation website, where a timeline of events and big game releases take players through the 30-year history of the platform as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations currently ongoing.

So that settles it then, the PS2 not only remains the best-selling console of all time, but gets a slight bump in its numbers. Anything to help it stay ahead of the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Switch.
However if Nintendo’s upcoming successor to the Switch is counted within the ‘family’ of Switch consoles, then that’ll be the new number one in no time, since the Switch and all its iterations are currently sitting around 146 million units sold.
