Sony’s PlayStation division is set to drive the biggest profits for the format holder since 1998, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) has said.
Speaking during an interview with Bloomberg, Yoshida-san said that one of the key aspects of PS4’s success has been the diverse range of software available for the system.
"The industry’s focus has narrowed too much,” he commented. “Can we continue producing interesting new products? That’s become a real concern.”
Sony has made a concerted effort to invest in numerous indie studios in the past few years, which has lead to title such as The Tomorrow Children and Tokyo Jungle. Indeed, these have seen as much attention from Yoshida-san as any blockbuster title.
“If it wasn’t for Sony, there is no way I would be doing this now,” said developer Crispy’s Yohei Kataoka. “It was like an angel investment, something unheard of in the games industry.”
