A New Zealand man faces nine years in prison after he was sentenced to the manslaughter of his partner’s child.
The prosecution claims that he was trying to beat his high score on the PlayStation version of Scarface and when interrupted struck the five month old boy. The prosecution claims that Trent Hapuku, 23, then continued to play the game rather than bring the injured child to hospital. The baby, Mikara Reti, later died from the injuries.
One of the doctors at the Waikato hospital says that they frequently get cases where children have been abused due to the interruption of a videogame. The child’s mother has unsurprisingly severed connections with Hapuku but said in court that she’d never forgive herself for leaving the child at home with her partner.
