Update – DOGOS is not one of the PlayStation Plus free games in September.
With the announcement of PlayStation Plus September 2016 games looming, speculation is rife as to what free PlayStation games subscribers will get next month.
Sony doesn’t officially announce its line-up of free games until the end of the month, so what you’re about to read is purely speculation, rumor and gossip. Keep an eye on the PlayStation Blog for updates.
PlayStation Plus September games?
1. DOGOS – PS4
The PS4 release of DOGOS on September 6, and its subsequent delay from its original July launch date, suggests that Sony could have made a deal with the Argentinian indie studio to bring its shoot ‘em game to PlayStation Plus for free next month.
DOGOS is a fast-paced shooter set in space. Players blast their way through 14 levels fighting against enemies and bosses that require various strategies to destroy. The game boasts an original soundtrack and four levels of difficulty as players take the role of a human pilot in his mission to quell the alien invasion.
2. RIVE – PS4
RIVE ticks all the boxes for your typical free PlayStation Plus game. It’s from an indie studio (Two Tribes), it’s due for release in the first half of September, and a price has yet to be revealed. It’s also just the type of game that makes the PlayStation Plus line-up. Rive is a 2D side-scrolling platformer in which players can rotate 360 degrees as they collect upgrades and blast away at enemies.
It’s not usual that Sony releases two brand new indie games as part of its PlayStation Plus offerings, so we’d speculate that only one of these games would make the cut, followed by a previously-released indie title.
3. Bastion – PS4, Vita
The popular indie action-RPG has just been reduced massively in the PlayStation Store Summer Sale. In the US, it’s been reduced from $14.99 to $3.74. Sales must now be suffering, which makes it the perfect time to send it out to the PlayStation Plus masses and let them experience one of the best indie games of recent years. Bastion won several awards and averaged an impressive 89&% on review-aggregation site, Metacritic.
4. South Park: The Stick of Truth – PS3
With the South Park: The Fractured But Hole release date pinned down for December, this would be a great time to make the first game in the series free. Obsidian Entertainment’s role-playing fantasy game features all your favorite characters from the cartoon and blends adult humor perfectly with entertaining gameplay. PlayStation Plus September provides the perfect time for the developer to give players the chance to find out what the series is all about, and bring in new fans for its upcoming title.
5. Dead Island – PS3
Purely based on the fact that the Dead Island Definitive Collection launched on PS4 in June, and Dead Island 2 is incoming, the original zombie survival game from Sumo Digital could appear in September. Techland’s action role-playing game takes place across a zombie-infested, open-world environment where survival skills are paramount to success.
6. XCOM: Enemy Within – PS3
2K’s tactical shooter has already appeared on Xbox’s Games With Gold for free earlier this year, prompting speculation that it will appear on PlayStation Plus. Expect turn-based battles as you battle against aliens with a wide range of weaponry and abilities.
7. Gods Eater Burst – PS Vita
With Bandai Namco’s God Eater Burst 2 landing at the end of August, it’s entirely possible that the second game in the action-role playing series will get a free release in September. In the game, players have to defeat the Aragami monsters within a specific time limit, earning rewards as they do so.
Other speculation from the PlayStation Universe team for PS Plus in September include: Persona 4, Stuntman Ignition, Resistance Burning Skies.
PlayStation Plus September rumor debunked
One of the rumors that we’re pretty sure won’t come true is that The Tomorrow Children founder’s pack (valued at approximately $30) will be free to PlayStation Plus subscribers when the game launches on September 6 to coincide with the PS Plus update. The fact that you can now buy the founder’s pack for $20 puts to bed that particular rumor.
Other rumors that we don’t think will happen
Watchdogs has been rumored for months on PS Plus but still hasn’t materialized. If it’s going to available for free then September is certainly the month to do it to help build the hype for Watch Dogs 2 which launches in October. Still, we don’t think it will make the cut. It’s still a big game, and how often do we see “triple-A” titles given away?
