Sony has announced that a new update for PlayStation Stars will mean that players are no longer awarded credit for spending money on subscriptions.
PlayStation Stars rewards points based on the amount of money that users spend on the PlayStation Store, as well as completing in-app quests. Points can then be traded for PSN credit and other items. Furthermore, up until today’s announcement, users could boost their PlayStation Stars level by spending money on membership services such as PlayStation Plus and EA Play.
Not only is that no longer the case, but Sony also confirmed that PlayStation Stars points are set to expire just over a year since the date they were earned. Previously, they would expire two years after they were acquired. An email sent to users reads as follows:

Effective October 24, 2024:
● New Points earned will expire at the end of the month plus 12 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance. Points earned prior to October 24, 2024 will continue to expire at the end of the month plus 24 months from the date on which they appear in your PlayStation Stars account balance.
Effective March 1, 2025:
● The definition of “Eligible Purchases” will be updated to exclude all subscription payments made on PlayStation Store (including any initial or renewal subscription payments for PlayStation Plus or any other subscription service), which means that Points will no longer be earned on subscription payments.
