PlayStation turns 20 in the U.S., celebrate with this documentary

Sony’s original PlayStation celebrates its 20th anniversary in North America this week, having launched on September 9, 1995.

Formed out of the ashes of a failed partnership with Nintendo, the PlayStation became a phenomenal worldwide success and a home to some of gaming’s biggest franchises, including Tekken, Ridge Racer, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and more.

The PlayStation sold just over 102 million units worldwide and was eventually discontinued in 2006. During its lifecycle, the system beat off competition from the SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64, and even went toe-to-toe with the Dreamcast for a brief period.
