Competing against the likes of Dragonball Xenoverse, Skullgirls 2nd Encore and Persona: Arena 2, the Mortal Kombat franchise has done everything right in 2015 with its developer NetherRealm Studios nailing everything from the combat mechanics and memorable character roster to the sheer amount of content available in Mortal Kombat X. Consequently, the Chicago-based developer walks away with the award for Best Fighting Game as voted for by readers of PlayStation Universe.
The amount of content in Mortal Kombat X is impressive, with players able to step into the online arena and multiple game modes, choosing multiple variations of each character, or compete in the excellent story mode. Though most fighting games just ditch any meaningful narrative, in Mortal Kombat X the storyline is highly entertaining and enriched by some excellent voice-acting.
In terms of production values and cinematic flair, NetherRealm nails the fantasy violence with its slick animation, quality presentation and stunning fatalities to produce a game that looks the part, while the fluid combat mechanics and customization ensure that this is one fighter that offers both simplicity and depth, as well as plenty of bone-crunching entertainment along the way.
Runner-up – Dragonball Xenoverse
Dimps’ fighting role-playing game is aimed squarely at fans of the series who will enjoy its unique storyline, customizable characters and fast-paced action. Dragonball Xenoverse is a massive step in the right direction for the series, and if Dimps continues to listen to fan feedback we have high hopes for Xenoverse 2.
