PlayStation VR boasts the ‘strongest title count,’ says GameStop boss

The CEO of GameStop has said he feels Sony’s PlayStation VR is likely to have the advantage over other virtual reality devices in terms of the quantity of titles available.

Speaking during the ICR Conference 2016 (via GameStop), Paul Raines described VR technology as a “big part” of the retail giant’s future, with Sony’s device looking to have the edge in terms of raw title count.

The more important thing will be the title count at launch. I think that’s going to be big. And from what we can see at this point, Sony seems to have the strongest title count. And it will come with a variety of accessories, by the way–there’ll be goggles and gloves and motion [controllers] and all kinds of things. So it’s very promising in a lot of ways.”

GameStop isn’t exaggerating either, as Sony has confirmed that over 100 games are currently in development for its upcoming VR gaming headset. Beyond the initial lineup, a number of big name companies have already expressed interest in working on VR games, including Resident Evil creator Capcom and Hideo Kojima

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation VR will be released in the first half of 2016, although a price point has yet to be confirmed. However, it has said that the device will be positioned at a similar cost to a new games console, while a market research company reckons it will cost between $300-400

PlayStation VR is competing with Oculus Rift in the virtual reality space, although the company has said that Sony’s effort isn’t quite as high-end as Oculus’s device. In terms of price, Sony may yet have the advantage, as Rift will cost a whopping $599 when it ships in March. As such, the developer behind Quantum Break reckons PS VR could be a ‘game changer’ if it retails at a consumer-friendly price point.
