According to estimates by research from Ampere, the active console base for PlayStation reached more than 10 million above that of Xbox’s by the end of last year, having increased dramatically since 2022.
As reported by The Game Business, by the end of 2022 PlayStation’s active console base in the US was around six million higher than its lead competitor, but that figure has since grown to 10 million above Xbox by the end of last year.

Ampere data also reveals that Xbox benefited greatly from Call of Duty going to Game Pass, with 47% of players in November 2024 playing the series on Xbox consoles. The previous year saw Xbox’s share of Call of Duty players at 35%.
Microsoft has of course adopted a multiformat strategy since last spring, with a number of former Xbox exclusives making their way to PlayStation and Nintendo formats. Last month saw the release of Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle come to the PS5, and August marks the launch of Gears of War Reloaded date-and-date with its Xbox counterpart.
