Possible new PS4 controller patented by Sony

CVG has today unearthed details of a patent from Sony for a possible new PlayStation 4 controller.

The device patent was first filed in 2012, but has now surfaced as it was published earlier this week.

The controller, as you can see from the above picture attached to the patent, is similar to a PS Move controller, and is described in the application as follows:

"A controller device to interface with a computer gaming system includes a body having a handle and an object disposed at one end of the handle. A touch surface is disposed on one side of the handle. The touch surface has an indicator that is identified by a surface characteristic on the touch surface. The touch surface provides an area for receiving directionality control in response to interfacing by a finger of a user."

While we know the PS4 supports the current PS Move controller, Sony might be thinking of upgrading its capabilities to bring it more in line with the DualShock 4; something that is strongly suggested by the device’s inclusion of a touchpad.

Whether the controller will ever see release or not is an unknown factor. Stay tuned to PSU for more details.
