Popular video game strategy guide publisher Prima Games is shutting down after 28 years.
Reported initially on EGM Now, the news was confirmed by the Dorling Kindersley division of Penguin Random House.
First GamesMaster and GamesTM, now this. Crikey, what a year.
Shutting Down was an “Extremely Difficult Decision”
Prima Games will officially close its doors in the Spring of 2019. However, the Roseville office will close much earlier than its counterparts in New York and Indianapolis; at some point in mid-November of this year. While a selection of employees at the Indianapolis office will continue to publish content until March.
Commenting on the news, Dorling Kindersley explained the decision was an “extremely difficult” one to make. But, no doubt, a financial necessity given the sheer volume of free strategy guides available on the internet today.
A Brief History of Prima Games
In 1990, Prima Games owner Ben Dominitz joined forces with writer Rusel DeMaria to create a video game strategy guide imprint initially titled “The Secrets of the Games”.
The duo began by releasing a quintet of guides: Nintendo Games Secrets, Sega Genesis Games Secrets, Turbografx Games Secrets, Game Boy Games Secrets and The Official Lucasfilm Games Air Combat Strategies Book.
20 years later, Prima Games began selling its guides on Steam. Before merging with fellow strategy guide publisher BradyGames in 2015.
Over the past 28 years, Prima Games has published millions of copies of its expertly crafted strategy guides. Some of the most popular include guides for Myst, TIE Fighter, and Secret of Mana.
